Sliding Tandems and State Bridge Laws: The Driver's Guide

Where your tandems sit decides whether 79,000 pounds is a legal load or a citation — and the rules change at state lines. Here's the whole picture, from what one hole moves to the kingpin laws that catch drivers out West.

Why the law cares where your tandems sit

Your gross weight can be perfectly legal while your axles are not. That's the part that surprises new drivers: the scale isn't just weighing the truck, it's weighing each group of axles, because pavement and bridges don't feel your gross — they feel wherever the weight touches down. Eighty thousand pounds spread over 51 feet of axle spacing crosses a bridge like a long, polite wave. The same eighty thousand bunched onto axles standing close together hits it like a fist.

Sliding your trailer tandems is how you control that distribution on a standard van or reefer. The bogie — the sliding frame your trailer axles ride on — locks into a rail with a row of holes. Pull the pins, move the trailer over the locked bogie, and the axles end up in a new position under the load. Slide them forward, toward the cab, and they sit closer to the freight's center of gravity, so they carry more of it and your drive axles carry less. Slide them back and the weight walks the other way, onto the drives. Gross never changes; only the split does.

The federal floor: axle limits and the bridge formula

On the Interstate, federal law sets the numbers every state has to allow: 12,000 lb on the steer in practice (the legal single-axle limit is 20,000, but steer tires usually rate lower), 34,000 lb on the drive tandem, 34,000 lb on the trailer tandem, 80,000 lb gross. Underneath those caps runs the federal bridge formula — W = 500 × (LN/(N−1) + 12N + 36) — which sets a maximum for every consecutive group of axles based on how many axles are in the group and the distance between the first and last of them. A standard 5-axle rig with a 51-foot outer span works out to 79,875 by the raw formula; the official table rounds to the nearest 500, which is the only reason the famous 80,000 exists. What one hole is worth

The working rule: holes on 4-inch centers move about 250 pounds per hole, holes on 6-inch centers about 400 pounds. So a ticket showing your drives 1,100 over on a 4-inch rail means 1,100 ÷ 250 = 4.4 — round up, slide five holes forward, and expect roughly 1,250 pounds to move from the drives to the tandems. Round up every time. A slide that leaves you 50 pounds over is exactly as illegal as the one you started with, and the reweigh fee is the same either way.

Those per-hole numbers are estimates, not physics constants — they depend on your trailer's geometry and where the load sits. Treat the first slide on an unfamiliar trailer as a calibration: weigh, slide a known number of holes, reweigh, and now you know what that rail actually moves. The 36-foot rule nobody tells you about

Here's the violation that confuses everyone at the fuel desk. Federal law allows two consecutive tandems to carry 34,000 pounds each only when the distance from the first axle of the front tandem to the last axle of the rear tandem is at least 36 feet. Slide your tandems far enough forward — chasing a drive-axle problem, or setting up for California — and that drives-to-trailer-axles span can shrink below the line. Now your steer is legal, your drives are legal, your tandems are legal, and the four-axle group they form together is not. The scale master isn't inventing a charge; it's 23 U.S.C. 127 doing exactly what it says. When you're heavy on both ends and short on span, the fix is load placement or a permit, not a longer argument.

California, Florida, and the kingpin states

Federal law is the floor on the Interstate, but states add their own geometry rules, and the one that matters most runs on the biggest freight lane in the country. California caps the distance from the kingpin to the rearmost trailer axle at 40 feet for trailers with two or more axles (38 for single-axle). On a 53-foot trailer, that means your tandems simply cannot live at the back of the rail — most drivers keep them at or ahead of the hole their fleet marks for California and plan their axle weights around it. The classic mistake is scaling legal in Phoenix with the tandems slid deep, then crossing at Needles into a ticket: legal weight, illegal geometry.

Florida runs a similar idea with different numbers — trailers over 48 feet are held to 41 feet, measured kingpin to the center of the rear axle group. A handful of other states and some toll authorities keep their own kingpin or wheelbase quirks, and off the Interstate, state bridge tables and grandfather clauses take over entirely. The operational rule that keeps you out of trouble: know the kingpin number for every state on the trip before you scale, and set the tandems for the strictest state you'll touch, not the state you're standing in. Sliding forward for California moves weight onto your drives — so a load that scales with 300 pounds of drive margin in Texas may not have a legal California configuration at all. That's a conversation to have with the shipper at the dock, not with a DOT officer at Banning.

A workflow that keeps you legal in all 50

Scale every heavy load at the first CAT after the shipper — the weigh costs less than lunch and the citation starts in the hundreds. Check gross first; sliding can't fix gross. Then fix the heavy axle group with the calculator, round up, and reweigh. Before you leave the parking lot, run the trip in your head: which states, whose kingpin law is strictest, does the California hole still leave the drives legal, and does the drives-to-tandems span stay past 36 feet? Five minutes of that beats any afternoon you'll ever spend at a scale house. Remember fuel in the same breath — topping both tanks adds 800-some pounds, most of it to the steer and drives, so a ticket cut with quarter tanks needs margin for the fill. And when the load itself is the problem — too much weight too far forward or back — make the shipper rework it while you're still in their yard. Once you sign for it and roll, their loading mistake becomes your ticket.
